UNISON, Inc. is an American company based in Mountain View, California.

We’re a small team of passionate people from companies like Meta, Sony, Apple and research labs like the IARAI (Institute of Advanced Research in Artificial Intelligence). UNISON was founded by Maxim Perumal who previously turned down joining Meta after building a VR headset at 15 years old.

Notes on the founding story of UNISON, by Maxim:

“I grew up in the countryside of France surrounded by wildlife and lakes. I was the only teenager in our village but my dad, a painter, filled our house with books, art and music in which I would plunge everyday in between my excursions in nature. Then came the iMac, our first computer at home. And it changed everything.

I started building worlds in Minecraft, first for myself, and then for my friends and theirs friends. It taught me everything: (1) to write code, (2) to design, (3) to manage. I dived into Minecraft and resurfaced with friends, skills, and a vision. I was 13 and I had found what I still love to do to this day. So my mathematics tutor dedicated himself to turning me into a competent enough computer scientist to build what I wanted to.

This led me to building my own VR headset from scratch, because as a teenager I could not afford to buy an Oculus VR headset. I designed the hardware, the PCBs, the 3D printed parts, the SDKs, the drivers, and the simple firmware. I posted about it online and Meta (then Facebook) heard about it. They flew me to the USA at 15 years old, and offered me to join. I declined and instead open-sourced everything, and started working on what has now become UNISON.”
